Auburn Fire 1916 by Josslyn & Martin

This is a A2 Limited edition (100) print is based on a painting by Martin. This Synthetic Cubist work centres on the theme of institutionalised oppression. Its composition is built from a series of symbolic elements that invite the viewer into a layered narrative. The kangaroos stand as observers of country and culture; the caged figure—whom I refer to as the Watcher—embodies enforced containment and the surveillance of lives lived under constraint. The improbable tin kite becomes a pivotal metaphor. Historically, kites in India were used as instruments of dissent during the Simon Commission: people would write their grievances against British rule onto their kites and release them into the sky as public acts of protest. By rendering the kite in tin—an object too heavy to fly—this work points to the suppression of voices that once rose freely, and to the weight imposed by systems designed to hold them down.
