The Triffids by Maureen Finck

This painting was inspired by a visit to Mt. Lofty Botanic Gardens, but the flowers took on a life of their own.

Many years ago I read John Wydham’s book ‘The Day of the Triffids’, and for some time imagined these plants entering my bedroom window.

A triffid is a fictional tall, mobile, carnivorous plant species, created by John Wyndham in his 1951 novel.

The word “triffid” has become a common reference in British English to describe large, invasive or menacing-looking plants.
