Torus 7 by Helena Lillywhite – The torus is more than just a shape, it’s a pulse of energy, a rhythmic, self-sustaining flow with a void at its heart. Energy spirals inward, courses through, and emerges anew, an endless dance that mirrors the forces of nature itself, like the mesmerising vortex of a tornado or the hypnotic pull of a whirlpool.

A few years ago, I found myself captivated by this concept of continuous energy, leading me to explore the torus in my work. Imagine a world where energy is boundless, freely available, pulsing through existence without restraint. If we could only harness this force, if it truly exists, we might liberate ourselves from the constraints of economic control and breathe life into a more harmonious relationship with our delicate ecosystem.

In my torus sculptures, each piece is composed of identical, flowing “fins,” each moving in its own right yet uniting to form a singular, organic whole. They weave together like strands of DNA, the very blueprint of life, evoking both structure and fluidity. There is a delicacy to this form, a fragility that reflects the ephemeral nature of energy itself,  something ever-present yet intangible, powerful yet fleeting. The skeletal framework hints at a deeper essence, the backbone of existence, the unseen currents that shape our world and sustain us.

This is my interpretation of the torus effect: a symbol of infinite motion, a whisper of unseen forces, both strong and fragile, ever-flowing through the fabric of life.
