Water, Wine and Olives by Georgia Clark – These clay barrels used to be the life blood of the villagers in Cyprus, where my mother came from. They took forty days to make and were often made in situ. When I first saw them, mainly lying long abandoned in crumbling buildings, I was instantly struck by not only their beauty, but their position in time. Hundreds of years of history and service, now lying in stoic quietness. Subsequent visits to my mothers village has seen these large vessels sometimes stolen and sold for decorative purposes, scrubbed clean and set in concrete. I feel fortunate to have snapped this shot before they were all pilfered and have recently had the nostalgic urge to paint them as I remember.
