‘Way Without’ 21.7’25 painted by Tillian

‘Way Without’ unfolds as a semi-abstract cartography of perception, memory, and spirit. Its prismatic planes of green, ochre, turquoise, and violet shift fluidly between the vegetal, the mineral, and the atmospheric, evoking a world in which land is not a backdrop but a living presence.
This is not a landscape to be “viewed” so much as entered. Shapes resemble leaf veins, river systems, crystalline facets, and protective enclosures, suggesting an ecology in perpetual metamorphosis. At the centre, gem-like forms read as portals, thresholds through which the viewer might sense another order of reality. My work carries a mythopoetic charge, echoing the archetypal motif of the journey without a prescribed path — the initiatory passage through the unknown. It resonates with Indigenous epistemologies, where Country is storied, relational, and sentient, and where colour and form encode knowledge of season, water, and spirit.
In the shifting interplay of light, hue, and line, ‘Way Without’ invites us to walk without a map, to navigate instead by intuition, presence, and a reciprocity with place.
