Synopsis
This body of work progresses through the exploration of my phobia of snakes. Living on the Sunshine Coast, I am in the heartland of the snake. In this work I replicate a dream I had in the middle of painting this series of works. I was in my studio and from behind my desk, this large Mamba snake slowly came towards me. It didn’t attack me. It didn’t bite me. It was curious. As inquisitive of me, as I was of it. I’d like to say the dream finished and I woke refreshed. No. I started screaming hysterically in the dream and woke myself up in the middle of the night and couldn’t go back to sleep. Instead lying in bed planning this artwork in my head.
The hand written text on the canvas says ‘They are beautiful and graceful. I am lucky to be in their home.’ A mantra I say over and over when I’m gardening and I’m elbow deep in the bushes.
