White DingoSlumbering in the sunlight, curled between two granite boulders ever watchful and aware of what was going on around him.

A Limited Edition Print (25) fine art photograph by Elizabeth McNamee.

This beautiful white dingo and other true dingoes are Australia’s only large predator and are legendary as Australia’s wild dog.   Recent analysis of the genetics of both the Dingo and the closely related New Guinea Singing Dog provides evidence that they arrived in Oceania at least 8,300 years ago.  Dingoes are considered native to Australia.  A shift in public and scientific communities’ attitude toward the role and protection of dingoes in Australia has been officially recognize over the past decade.  Australia’s dingo is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

Similar to the domestic dog in structure and habits, the dingo has short soft fur, a bushy tail, and erect pointed ears. It is about 120 cm long, including the 30-cm tail, and stands about 60 cm tall at the shoulder. Females are smaller than males in both height and weight.  Fur colour varies between yellowish and reddish brown, often with white underparts, paws, and tail tip, some dingoes may be either jet black or pure white. Dingoes are different from domestic dogs by their longer muzzle, larger ears, more-massive molars, and longer and more-slender canine teeth.  It especially resembles Indian pariah dogs and wolves.

* Researchers say they’ve cracked the genetic code of the pure desert dingo.  The study found pure dingoes lie somewhere between wolves and domestic dogs.

Like many native Australian species a major threat is habitat loss, although they’ve persisted in modified rural landscapes.

The unique story surrounding each animal portrait comes with the print.
