Wild Flower Season by Meg Shaw

This painting is inspired by south-western Victoria, particularly Gariwerd Country (Lower Grampians, Victoria). In petyan season (springtime) native flowers bloom across this natural environment. Flowers are usually scattered in clumps and are robust looking, but their ancient beauty and delicate forms are stunning. In ‘Wildflower Season’, I’ve hinted at native grasses and parrot peas, as if the eye is sweeping across the wider lanscape. There is also a suggestion of lateral water, an overcast sky and indigenous ceremonial smoke.

The style is contemporary and the approach is intuitive – pulling together memories and impressions of the landscape, colours and atmosphere of lower Gariwerd Country. I’ve used palette knives, fingerpainting, dabbing rags and an assortment of brushes to create this piece. It has been painted on stretched canvas, measuring approximately 125 x 55 x 4 cm. It’s framed in Tasmanian Oak and is ready to hang. The colours are earthy which reflect the area. The painting has been coated with a permanent sealer.

I’ve painted ‘Wild Flower Season’ with respect to First Nations peoples. The pictures show painting close-ups, the framing (in Tasmanian Oak) and the painting in virtual situ.
