One of the great innovators of European abstraction, Vasily Kandinsky (1866–1944) broke new ground in painting during the first decades of the 20th century.
This comprehensive exhibition, curated with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, draws from the Guggenheim’s rich holdings to reveal Kandinsky’s work in depth – from his beginnings in Munich, to his return to his birthplace of Moscow with the outbreak of World War One, followed by the interwar years in Germany where he was an instructor at the Bauhaus, and his final chapter in Paris.

As part of the Tarnanthi Festival, AGSA presents the first survey exhibition of acclaimed Western Aranda artist Vincent Namatjira. Renowned for producing paintings laden with dry wit, Namatjira has established himself in the past decade as a celebrated portraitist and a satirical chronicler of Australian identity. His paintings offer a wry look at the politics of history, power and leadership from a contemporary Aboriginal perspective. Namatjira often positions himself in this history – out of place and out of time – and in doing so he helps us to reconcile our complex and traumatic pasts.

Radiate is a survey exhibition of the past 20+ years of practice for internationally acclaimed artist Donna Marcus.
In this exhibition, Marcus threads familial connection with conceptual and historical underpinnings from marine salvaging in the early 1900s to themes of memory, minimalism, and geometry. A once long-term resident of the Gold Coast Hinterland, Marcus is a dedicated collector of domestic materials that she uses to explore the formal properties of composition, form, and pattern.

Death Metal Summer: Deanna Templeton and Ed Templeton brings together more than 140 photographs by two of our era’s most vital artists.
With works from 1995-2022 selected and laid out in three large wall installations, it is a highly energetic overview of their overlapping visions. The show features many of the married couple’s most famous images – from Deanna’s exquisite swimming pool photos to Ed’s iconic pipe skating work – as well as those shot on their local turf Huntington Beach, California, where late capitalist life and the suburban dream are collapsing in on themselves.
Shooting with film and employing an off-the-cuff street-style manner, the artists respond to the chaotic intensity and impossible beauty and sadness of life in a manner that seems that there is always something at stake.

Paris-based artist Tarek Atoui (b. 1980, Beirut) is a composer whose work considers how sound can be experienced across multiple senses, the ways it facilitates social interaction, and its relationship to place, history and ecology. He develops his multi-disciplinary projects over several years and in collaboration with musicians, instrument makers, technicians and other artists.
Waters’ Witness is an immersive sonic landscape based on the acoustic identities of port cities from Athens to Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Beirut, Porto, Istanbul and now Sydney. Recording sounds close to the sea and under the water, Atoui has produced a unique score for each city which becomes part of the work’s soundscape and a source of inspiration for new sound sculptures and musical devices. Waters’ Witness is an immersive sonic landscape that is reimagined in a different format for each presentation.
