Including major new and recently commissioned works, APT involves a great depth of research by the Gallery’s in-house curators working collaboratively with a network of artists across wide and diverse geographies from Australia and the Asia Pacific region.

2. QUEER

Stories from the NGV Collection

QUEER shines a light on the NGV Collection to examine and reveal the queer stories works of art can tell. This exhibition of works from the NGV Collection spans historical eras and diverse media including painting, drawing, photography, decorative arts, fashion, video, sculpture, and design and explores queerness as an expression of sexuality and gender, a political movement, a sensibility, and as an attitude that defies fixed definition.

3. Primavera 2021

The MCA’s annual exhibition of young Australian artists aged 35 and under.

Since its inception, the exhibition has celebrated the achievements of Australian artists in the early stages of their careers and fulfilled an important role in bringing younger artists to the attention of a wide audience. Each year the Primavera curator undertakes extensive research, travelling across the country to meet young artists.

4. Free/State

2022 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art

Free/State assembles a group of artists who are fearless; the provocateurs, vanguards and outsiders – challenging histories and art forms, and in the process, offering reflections on an era of multi-faceted global upheaval. The exhibition explores ideas of transcending states, from the spiritual and artistic to the psychological, and embraces notions of freedom in expression, creation and collaboration.

Delivering new and unexpected visions of transformative personal and public moments, in mediums spanning photography, painting, sculpture, installation and the moving image, Free/State presents a multi-generational collective of artists hailing from every Australian state and territory.

5. BSAF

Brisbane Street Art Festival 2022

BSAF provides a framework of showcase and engagement for public art across Brisbane.

6. Michael Jalaru Torres | Jurru

Wirriya (happy) from the series Native 2019

Djugun and Yawaru photographic artist Michael Jalaru Torres explores social history and the political and cultural identities of community members from the Kimberley region of Western Australia, with his innovative portraiture and abstracted landscape photography.

The artists own story is woven throughout the works in the gallery space, interlinked by Torres’ imperative to map and understand not only himself but others through the lens of his camera.

Jurru is a window into the joy and challenges of being from, belonging to and living in one of the most remote and beautiful places in the world, and a celebration of enduring stories and connection to Country.
