Hi, I’m Grayson Cooke, and this is some of my work – I hope you like it! I am a media artist, and I work with a range of imaging tools, from drones and virtual cameras to satellites. I love the images of the Earth we can produce when we engage with scientific tools and resources, which are so often very beautiful, and strange, and even produce a sense of wonder – and I also like to kind of push against the blind spots of scientific data; working with waste data, for example, materials rejected by science but which hold simply incredible understanding and apprehensions of the planet.
I have exhibited my work very widely in Australia and internationally. In 2020, I won the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize at the South Australian Museum, with a work, “Open Air”, which was also purchased for the art collection of the Australian Parliament House. I have shown in many major art prizes and festivals in Australia, including the Ballarat Foto Biennale, the Head On Photo Festival, the Australian Photography Awards, and the Josephine Ulrick & Win Schubert Photography Award at HOTA. Internationally, my work has been shown very widely, in forums like the Japan Media Arts Festival, the WRO Media Art Biennale, the Noordelicht Festival in the Netherlands, and the Imagine Science Film Festival in New York.
