Miranda Free is an accomplished Australian artist whose work captures the quiet poetry of the everyday. With a focus on landscapes, figurative works, and still life, her paintings are grounded in contemporary realism and rendered primarily in oils. Miranda’s ability to work from life gives her pieces a sense of immediacy and presence that resonates deeply with viewers.
Her creative journey began after a career in science, education, and communications, which laid a thoughtful foundation for the observational depth found in her art. Formal training at an Atelier-style school in Brisbane helped shape her technical skills, which she continued to hone while painting part-time. A move to Perth in 2013 marked the beginning of her full-time studio practice.
In 2016, Miranda embarked on a painting tour around Australia, immersing herself in the landscape and expanding her visual language. This was followed by more than two years living in Kuala Lumpur, where she continued to exhibit and grow her international presence. Today, she works from two studios — one nestled in the garden surrounds of Nannup, and the other in coastal Fremantle, Western Australia.
Her exhibition history includes twelve solo shows and over fifty group exhibitions, both nationally and internationally. She has completed six artist residencies and received numerous awards and accolades, most recently as a finalist in the 2024 Lethbridge 20,000 Small Scale Art Award in Brisbane and the prestigious John Leslie Landscape Prize in Victoria.
Beyond her studio practice, Miranda is also a passionate arts advocate. In 2021, she founded the Blackwood River Arts Trail and played a key role in establishing it as a significant annual event in the regional arts calendar. Her work continues to evolve, driven by a curiosity for the human experience and the natural world.
