10,000x – by Tania FitzGerald

On my recent stopover in Dubai I went to Lumiere museum exhibiting works of Kandinsky and Gaudi. This was a push to act on the ideas that were brewing in my head for quite a bit now. I absolutely adore mosaic and stained glass and wanted to create something that would give this feel.

This painting was created in many layers. The first layer was made in acrylic paint. Then I proceeded to make my “tiles”. For some I used acrylic pours, some were cut from the most luxurious handmade Japanese Chiyogami paper. It is such a pleasure to touch it and incorporate it in my work. Some other beautiful handmade and textured paper was used as well as designer fabric.
Then I laid those mosaic tiles making sure the stained glass layer was showing through to draw the eye in. Once I was happy with the layout, I added few layers of acrylic binder to seal the “tiles” in and give them protection. It became a beautiful solid surface. You can feel the surface of each tile, yet they become the part of one integrated solid surface. Pleasure to touch, really.
The next step was to line each tile with Liquitex acrylic marker and make sure they were all connected. I added few freehand elements to balance it off. Once the painting is finished, again, I add few layers of UV protection and varnish to make sure it keeps its colour for as long as a professional painting can.

This painting really draws the eye in. It’s a pleasure to wander from tile to tile to look at small details. Yet from the distance it creates an impact in any style of interior due to the richness of its colour.
The edges are painted in creamy linen colour to complement the painting.
