A Little Dog That Wags His Tail by Rebecca James

The title of this painting comes from an Emily Dickinson poem with the same title — The Little Dog That Wags His Tail. It is a poem, in part, about the natural instinct in small children and in dogs to be exuberant and playful.

I hope that my art captures something true about the world — the beauty of the ordinary, the complexity of human interaction, the intensity of an emotion. My art is largely figurative and I attempt to represent what I see and experience with a sense of appreciation and humour. My work is colourful and eye-catching and can tend towards the naive, sometimes incorporating elements of fantasy. I like my art to tell a story, to prompt the viewer to think ‘I know exactly how that feels,’ or to inspire a sense of joy, longing or nostalgia.

Edges painted black.
