Anger and empathy aren’t mutually exclusive, 2025 by Samantha Poling
Is from the photographic series, Feel It Quietly. Breaking from the confines of representation, Feel It Quietly conveys an inner world of emotion by abstraction’s ability to illuminate “more of what one thinks than of what one sees.” (Mark Rothko)
Anger and empathy aren’t mutually exclusive, 2025 is a visual meditation on the threshold between recognition and abstraction, where light, color, and form hover just beyond articulation. The image invites a sensory and emotional response that unfolds slowly, asking us to listen, softly and without urgency, to what color and shadow might whisper when we let them.
Inspired by Mark Rothko and his fellow Abstract Expressionists, Anger and empathy aren’t mutually exclusive removes all connections to the physical world, and embodies the metaphysical and emotional worlds that surround and inhabit us. My mind explodes with colour, reflective of my current state. Details are hazy and dreamlike, evoking a sense of obscured meaning.
Things are not as they seem. Nothing is real and everything is real.
