Athena & Theia’s Gifts by Miranda Free

In addition to her prominence as the goddess of wisdom and war, Athena was the goddess of pottery while Theia was the goddess of jewellery. Two ceramic works, and a worn, but lovely old jewellery box, are featured in this composition along with dried protea and leucadendron blooms. As is usual in many of my still life works, I included the jewellery box as it was my mother’s, while the beautiful salt glazed and wood fired vase made by a ceramicist friend, was an anniversary gift. Personal significance in my paintings is frequently present.
