These are called natural footers, those with their right foot forward are called goofy footers. sort of like left handed people have been called cackie handers. I started ride surfboards in the 60’s and am a goofy footer. I prefer waves braking to the left ( when you look towards the shore). a right breaking wave to a goofy footer is a backhander.
The surfer in this painting is riding backhand. surfing backhanders is more difficult as you have your back to the face of the wave. Unframed, a wire across the back, ready to hang. sides painted black.
