Distant Plains by Alpana Rai is inspired by the rich and vibrant tones of the Australian landscape and the changes of light and mood throughout the day. With a process rooted in instinct and intuition, Alpana’s images typically begin from a desire to interpret a specific situation or locality. While layering and mark making techniques are utilised to achieve dimension and form, expressive brushstroke work and highly impactful colours are incorporated to invoke a rushing, rhythmic movement and flow. Pieces are worked and reworked in an effort to capture the experience until, eventually, the paint offers up its own conclusions, which Alpana routinely develops into the work’s ultimate expression.

Immigrating to Melbourne from her native India more than a decade ago, Alpana Rai is a self-taught, abstract landscape artist who was raised under a rich tapestry of cultural influences, with an immense love for painting and artistic expression.
