Fink River Oasis painted by Kathryn Fenton -This loose abstracted work is a slight departure from my usual figurative landscapes, but when I turn my mind to the Australian landscape and mixed media, there is an economy of detail and composition as a result. The expansive deep pinks and ochres with the occasional sage green clumps of brush in this ancient landscape makes for a sublime palette to work with.

Its been a dream of mine to take some serious travel time out to the desert and paint the country, and as I couldn’t wait any longer I’ve been inspired lately to work from remembered scenes from Documentaries and friend’s images of the Fink River area in the Northern Territory.

There is a wonderful grove of cabbage palms that spring out of the dry dusty dessert called Palm Valley and this sudden lushness is due to the Fink River carving its way through the area.  Apparently the oldest river in the world.

As I love symbolism in paintings, in this work I have included the extraordinary Stuart Desert Pea and the unique Black Cockatoo which are both found in this region.

Painted in acrylics, charcoal and pastel on canvas
