Full Moon  by Rebecca James

My daughter is keeping a moon diary for school this month. We’ve had to go outside each night and look at the moon and then draw it. It’s a nice thing to do and has reminded me that I should go outside and look at the evening sky more often — not only when my daughter is doing a school project. This painting is inspired by the idea of making the effort to notice the beauty around us.

I hope that my art captures something true about the world — the beauty of the ordinary, the complexity of human interaction, the intensity of an emotion. My art is largely figurative and I attempt to represent what I see and experience with a sense of appreciation and humour. My work is colourful and eye-catching and can tend towards the naive, sometimes incorporating elements of fantasy. I like my art to tell a story, to prompt the viewer to think ‘I know exactly how that feels,’ or to inspire a sense of joy, longing or nostalgia.
