Girl with Flowers by Rebecca James

This painting was inspired by Charles Blackman’s series of paintings of girls with flowers.

I hope that my art captures something true about the world — the beauty of the ordinary, the complexity of human interaction, the intensity of an emotion. My art is largely figurative, people and things, and I attempt to represent what I see and experience with a sense of appreciation and humour. My work is often colourful and illustrative and can tend towards the naive. It frequently has elements of fantasy about it. I like my art to tell a story, to prompt the viewer to think ‘I know exactly how that feels,’ or to inspire a sense of joy or longing or nostalgia.
