Madrigal; Hot Earth by Ian Burgess

This artwork is my interpretation, with paint on canvas, of the complex polyphonic vocal style Madrigal where unaccompanied voices blend together in a musical form reflecting the structure of a poem. The different ‘voices’ in this painting are my various blocks of colours and shapes where I weave light and dark hues with intuitive and deliberate shapes to achieve a cohesive ‘poem of abstraction’

The vision of ‘Hot Earth’ came to the painting unconsciously as I probed the colour palette for my ‘voice’ to reveal authentic and expressive design connections strong enough to support the poetry. The red glow forms a warm undertone producing colourful steam clouds.
