Man, this must be the life by Laura Oczos is a large abstract painting inspired by the Stoic philosophical practise of ‘view from above’. This is a visualisation technique that the Stoics of ancient Greece and Rome used to remedy anxiety, usher in tranquility, and imbue the user with a truer sense of their small (but poignant) place within the universe. It involves moving to a third person perspective, stepping back from a narrow perspective and looking at the big picture. This work is a visual representation of this practise, or more importantly my memory of doing this myself. What emerges has references to cartography, and acts as a visual timestamp of my experience. This was an earlier style of mine (that I no longer create) where I focused on a more graphic and bolder representation of the above inspiration, more directly inspired by repetitive routes traveled. This was created as part of a series of work, with other similar pieces a finalist in the 2021 National Capital Art Prize and featured in Home Designs Magazine.

It has a bold yellow background and contrasting interlocking forms in blues, pinks and greens. The interlocking forms are heavily detailed in contrasting and complimentary colours. All insitu photos are to scale.
