Mermaid Song  by Rebecca James

Mermaids have been the subject of art, mythology, poetry and story telling since the beginning of recorded time. And no wonder — they are so strange and beautiful! They are always romantic — but they are also quite often dangerous. They seduce us with their song, luring us into the depths of the sea, beautiful symbols of the power and mystery of the ocean. Through story and art they reveal the fickle nature of mankind and the dangers of succumbing to temptation.

I hope that my art captures something true about the world — the beauty of the ordinary, the complexity of human interaction, the intensity of an emotion. My art is largely figurative and I attempt to represent what I see and experience with a sense of appreciation and humour. My work is colourful and eye-catching and can tend towards the naive, sometimes incorporating elements of fantasy. I like my art to tell a story, to prompt the viewer to think ‘I know exactly how that feels,’ or to inspire a sense of joy, longing or nostalgia.
