Who was this beautiful woman living in a distant time and place? What was her life like and why was this elegant marble sculpture made of her? Perhaps it was a gift to her husband on their wedding day. Or maybe the sculptor was simply taken by her personality or looks and wanted to immortalise her in stone. How did it feel for her to watch him draw her form out of the pure white marble? I imagine her sitting for the artist, day after day. Did she daydream while watching the light filtering through the fine dust or was she an intimate friend of the sculptor and chatting away when she needed to be holding still?

These are the sorts of questions that run through my mind when I look at figurative sculptures or paintings. Each one holds secrets and memories from past times. How wonderful to be a novelist or filmmaker and be able to tell their stories.
