Flowers are a bit like people, you need to spend time with them in order to get to know them properly and truly connect. When this lovely bunch of lisianthus came into my home, it had been quite a long time since I’d had a full bunch of them to admire. I have photographed them before, so I remembered their long, delicate stems, elegantly shaped leaves, tissue-thin petals and darling little buds.

Even so, it took me 12 hours of working to reconnect. I wanted to express the lyrical feel of these flowers and show something of their personality. What I learned along the way, trying various angles, lighting options and working with different stems was that each bloom had its own identity and temperament. Some were playful, while others seems more formal and courtly in their manner. Some were quite rebellious and refused to cooperate no matter how kindly I coaxed them.

Like people, they each have a beauty of their own despite their differences in character and that made it all the more interesting to spend time discovering a bit more of the inner world of lisianthus flowers.
