About Artist:
Influenced by the motion and emotional content of the external environment, Melbourne artist Alpana Rai’s energetic abstracts explore the lay of the Australian land. Symbolically highlighting its infinite forms, shapes, tones and breadth, her work depicts the collison between her memorised and imagined scapes, resulting in deeply layered, thought provoking, profoundly conceptualised scenes.
With a process rooted in instinct and intuition, Alpana’s images typically begin from a desire to interpret a specific situation or locality. While layering and mark making techniques are utilised to achieve dimension and form, expressive brushstroke work and highly impactful colours are incorporated to invoke a rushing, rhythmic movement and flow. Pieces are worked and reworked in an effort to capture the experience until, eventually, the paint offers up its own conclusions, which Alpana routinely develops into the work’s ultimate expression.

Alpana’s work is represented in private collections throughout Australia and overseas.
