A painting by Eileen Rigby – ‘The Artist’ (Via Margutta, Roma)
A trip to Rome inspired this painting. As we walked along Via Margutta I was drawn to an eccentric character sitting outside his studio gallery. He sat smoking a cigar and acting as if he owned the world. His brightly coloured clothes were enhanced by the backdrop of a bright yellow wall and clinging green vine. He didn’t smile or engage with us in any way – he was far too important for that! The colour and the drama of it all seemed far too important to be ignored and sang out to be painted. The statement sized canvas hangs in a portrait orientation to showcase the subject which is essentially the artist.
