Who Lies Behind The Square by Saren Dobkins

This is a slightly different approach to express an idea, than I usually do. It asks for the viewer to think a little more deeply, as it speaks to a state of mind. This work explores the switch that the digital experience asks us to do. She looks from behind the array that social media presents to the public, as a configuration of neat squares that are composed to portray us in our best light. This creates a dissonance, between who we really are and the person we project to the critical eye of others, who are also probably doing exactly the same. The background colours of the squares are toned to create a descending rhythm, and the head studies that populate the squares, are gestural to contradict the ‘posed’ and carefully orchestrated images that are expected. The fact is we are mostly living quite ‘messy’ lives, and there is a fear that other people will find out that not everything is perfect. The title has two meanings then, one is a question and the other is a statement.
