With Cats, Some Say, One Rule is True: Don’t Speak Until You’re Spoken To by Rebecca James

The title of this painting is taken from the poem, The Ad-dressing Of Cats, by T.S.Eliot, which is from his whimsical book of poems, Old Possums Book Of Practical Cats. Interestingly, this book was also the inspiration for the broadway musical Cats.

I hope that my art captures something true about the world — the beauty of the ordinary, the complexity of human interaction, the intensity of an emotion. My art is largely figurative, people and things, and I attempt to represent what I see and experience with a sense of appreciation and humour. My work is often colourful and illustrative and can tend towards the naive. It frequently has elements of fantasy about it. I like my art to tell a story, to prompt the viewer to think ‘I know exactly how that feels,’ or to inspire a sense of joy or longing or nostalgia.

Acrylic on Canvas. Edges painted black. Wire on back and ready to hang.
