A Quiet Suburban Street by Michael Cawdrey

In the nineteen-fifties and sixties this would have been a typical suburban scene. While views like this are becoming more and more uncommon, they can still be found in some of Brisbane’s older suburbs. I want this painting to represent all of those quieter suburbs which retain the charm of earlier days despite the march of modernisation, bus stop signs included, which is why I haven’t mentioned the actual location.

I liked the way the tree echoed the shape of the sign. That isn’t contrived: I’ve depicted it exactly as it was, with its arch framing the scene.  The tree has been trained to conform to our requirements. There are no branches to its left, apart from a couple of new shoots it has sent out in good faith. It won’t be too long before they are chopped away, but for now they remain.

This is an original artwork in Acrylic, 55x61cm, painted on 3mm MDF which is sealed front, back, and edges. It is NOT ready to hang. It will require framing.
