Additional Information

Lots of people live on the backs of whales by Laura Oczos is a large abstract landscape painting inspired by the Stoic philosophical practise of ‘view from above’. This is a visualisation technique that the Stoics of ancient Greece and Rome used to remedy anxiety, usher in tranquility, and imbue the user with a truer sense of their small (but poignant) place within the universe. It involves moving to a third person perspective, stepping back from a narrow perspective and looking at the big picture. This work is a visual representation of this practise, or more importantly my memory of doing this myself. What emerges has references to cartography, and acts as a visual timestamp of my experience.

This work was created by building layers of medium. First, ink washes and acrylic glazes then spray paint and acrylic paints. Finally, there are layers of intricate pattern and mark making. This final layer is done to both contrast and compliment the paint layers. Due to this layering technique, this work has an incredible amount of depth, with various areas under-painting visible. It is a bold, statement piece with vibrant areas in multiple shades of pink and green. These are complimented by warmer areas of orange yellow and violet. As such, this work is contemporary yet very livable and would suit a varied range of interiors and tastes.

Framed in Tasmanian Oak with a satin finish. Ready to hang in portrait orientation however you could alter this to suit your tastes.

All photos are scaled accurately to size.
