Additional Information

Waterlilies 2 is a medium, portrait format, expressive botanical artwork in acrylic on deep sided artist quality, stretched cotton duck.  This painting features white water lilies in a deep blue lagoon. This work is unframed but ready to hang. The canvas sides are clean and raw.

The inspiration for this painting came from a recent, return visit to Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. My favourite place is Yellow Water Billabong, the scenery is amazing, the water lilies and wildlife are beyond description. I wanted to create something bright and expressive that can bring joy to viewers. Something that would portray the wild, untamed, messy yet beautiful images I saw on Yellow Water Billabong. I also sought inspiration from water lily works by Monet. I have been to the Musee de l’Orangerie in Paris which features Monet’s large scale panoramas of his gardens and ponds. You get close to his work and the colours morph into abstract and the painting only gains dimension and structure when viewed from a distance – incredible.

My painting is expressive and textured completed in an abstract, contemporary style.  Paint was applied with palette knife, brushes and even my fingers.  I used broad, textured strokes, with splatters to show the multitude of action that happens above and below the water. I often use my fingers when painting as it allows me to get even closer to my paintings, intimately feeling the texture and lusciousness of the paint. Paint colours include yellow, cream, blue, green, burnt sienna, Prussian blue.  The result is an active, contemporary approach to an impressionistic water work.
